Lynn Morgan, the Mary E. Wooley professor of anthropology at Mt. Holyoke College, spoke on Nov. 4, 2009 about “Reproductive Rights and Wrongs in Contemporary Latin America.” The lecture was sponsored by the UNM Department of Anthropology and the Alfonso Ortiz Center. Morgan is introduced by Louise Lamphere, UNM professor emeritus of anthropology.
Los Angeles comedian Ernie G talks about the Second Annual Hispanic Youth Symposium at the University of New Mexico, hosted by the Hispanic College Fund and New Mexico MESA (Math, Engineering, Science Achievement). During the event, students had the opportunity to connect with Hispanic mentors, attend workshops on college admissions and financial aid, compete for $14,000 in available scholarship funds, and more.
Ambassador Vicki Huddleson is a visiting fellow at Brookings Institution and a commentator for NBC Universal. She has served as chief of mission at the United States Interests Section in Havana, Cuba and as director and deputy director of Cuban Affairs at the U.S. Department of State. Her talk, “Retrospect: U.S. and Cuban Relations,” was part of the University Libraries commemoration of the Cuban Revolution.
Ruth Trinidad Galván is an assistant professor for the Department of Language, Literacy and Sociocultural Studies in the College of Education. She just returned from Ecuador where she was studying on a Fulbright Scholarship. As part of her Faculty Acknowledgement Award, she gave a talk on her research titled “Insights in the Migration Stream of Ecuadoran Women and the Husbands Who Stay Behind.”

Arciniega, special assistant to the chancellor of the California State University System, speaks on “The Importance of Proactive Leadership in Addressing the Issue of the Undocumented in Our Nation’s Colleges and Universities.” María Cristina López, chair of the Immigration Committee of the City of Santa Fe, speaks about organizing for immigrant rights in a lecture titled “Standing Up To The Madness: Nuestros Valores.” Martha Vázquez, chief U.S. district court judge, speaks on “The Hispanic Immigrant: The Power of Determination.”
Paul Neill, assistant professor of art history at Arkansas Tech University, presents “No Town of Its Class In Spain: Civic Architecture and Colonial Social Formation in Early 16th Century Santo Domingo, Española” at the University Art Museum. He discusses why a Eurocentric analysis of architecture in Santo Domingo is limiting and offers an interpretation based in regional, class factors. The essay was published in Hemisphere: Visual Cultures of the Americas, a new academic journal created by graduate students in UNM’s Department of Art and Art History.
