University Libraries has honored UNM Professor of Music Bradley Ellingboe with a Faculty Acknowledgment Award for his scholarly contributions. As part of the ceremony, he presented a short lecture titled “A Life in Music.” He is introduced by Christopher Mead, dean of the UNM College of Fine Arts.

Carolyn Abeita is an attorney in private practice in Albuquerque, N.M. She spoke at a University Libraries Indigenous Nations Native Pathway Lecture on Nov. 14 about Indian education from her perspective as a member of the UNM Board of Regents and a former student at UNM.

Anpao Duta Flying Earth is the Outreach and Community Programs Coordinator for an Albuquerque Public Schools magnet school, the Native American Community Academy. He is a member of the Lakota Sioux Tribe, and talks about how he navigated the shifting worlds he encountered growing up on a reservation is South Dakota, attending an Ivy League university, returning to the reservation, and his work now with Native American students in Albuquerque. His talk at UNM was sponsored by University Libraries Indigenous National Library Program.

The sun symbol is a part of Zia Pueblo’s heritage and is used by the tribe for religious purposes. But the state of New Mexico and hundreds of businesses use it without permission or licensing. In an Oct. 30 lecture sponsored by the University Libraries Indigenous Nations Library Program, Zia Pueblo Assistant Tribal Administrator Ken Lucero and other tribal members speak about the significance of the sun symbol and the battle to protect it.
